Nectarian Tour...Sacred Bodies of Water

The idea of  “The Nectarian Collective” tour came when Vishaka and I realized that we decided we were to go to the mainland to share my music as well as both meet eachother’s family and friends and go to places we both had never been before…and then we realized SeaStar and Parmita were planning on going to adventure in the mainland as well. Vishaka was about to finish up recording both of their CD’s and he thought, “If we are all going to be in California/Oregon at the same time we should try to do some shows together.” So the seed was planted.

The vision grew clearer as the official ceremonial honoring of the release of my album grew near. We decided to go for it and one enchanting and blessed night when we were all together in a healing circle of love and prayer and transformation our sacred journey presented itself.

For my CD release, on June 14th,  I had Parmita and Seastar share their music before me June 14th, and it was there that I made the announcement of our summer tour. That night at the show, Aaron proposed to Lana and she gave birth a few days later!

Up until the end of May I had been working full time with middle school kids at a Puna charter school. I realized that if I really wanted to do this tour and be in the mainland for certain festivals then it wasn’t going to be possible for me to be back by the beginning of August.  Plus, real talk is: I was just as tired of being in the classroom just as much as those hormonal pre teens were….(maybe more).  In the previous years I had always forfeited the opportunity to stay and tour with friends, so that I could “keep my job.” I know I couldn’t do that this time.
As soon as school was over Vishaka and I began planning the tour. Planning a tour for a group that just came into existence which had never actually all played together EVER, isn’t that easy. First of all, we had to come up with a name for us all. Michael Reidinger (Ghanji), Vishaka’s good friend and band mate of “Lotus Moon,”

that lived in Ojai, confirmed with us that he would play percussion with us and provide the musical equipment and the vehicles to get us where we need to go! Awesome. So there were five of us. Hmmmmm…3 women…. “Triple Goddess Tour”…sacred world music ensemble…..Sweet healing music…..a collection of beautiful music…. “The Nectarian Collective!” Ok, there’s the name! A band needs a website, so Vishaka worked vigilantly to create one quickly with the photos that we had.( www.nectarianmusic.com ) I began contacting various places, mostly yoga studios, based on certain dates of festivals and their locations.  Every day for the month of June Vishaka and I were working to put it together, me booking the gigs and Vishaka making the fliers and working on the website and mastering SeaStar and Parmita’s albums.

By the 2nd week of July the preparation work was beginning to wind down, we just needed to get ready to go! Our departure date was July 16th. Vishaka, Parmita and I got the same flight into L.A. I don’t think I had ever been so busy to the last minute before having to leave. Once we were seated on the plane…..what a relief….the Journey was about to begin….
We landed in L.A. pretty late and got picked up by my old friend Simone who I know from Big Island, but she now lives there. I had made arrangements, immediately after arriving, to swing by a house in Santa Monica to pick up a bunch of instruments that my friend Lea was gifting to us: It was like Christmas: A big bag of flutes, bells and rattles! A beautiful guitar, an Oud and a Saz! We could barely fit it all in the car along with all our luggage. After that we went back to Simone’s place where we decompressed and finally went to sleep.
My lovely new Guitar!
Vishaka, checking out the saz

The next day we got picked up by Vishaka’s friend Lisa, from Ojai. We put all our stuff in her car (PACKED) and on we went, about an hour to Ojai. She took us to where we were to stay- at this amazing old house, owned by Vishaka’s other friend and awesome artist Kelly. We felt blessed to land in such a sweet sanctuary nestled amongst the groves of oranges, avocados, pomegranates and nectarines.  It was quite hot and fortunately there was a (saltwater) pool!

Thank you Goddess.  This house is one of the oldest houses in that particular area of Ojai, where the spiritual teacher Krishnamurti, once stayed (actually in the room where Vishaka and I stayed) and where Kelly has invited guru Amma Karunamai to come and offer her blessings.  Not only was it a beautiful house, there was a beautiful peaceful energy as well as a piano! Yay!

We had a beautiful ceremony to set intentions, center our energies and focus our vision.  We also had a fancy dinner one night with all the pretty dishes and glasses and darn good bottle of Malbec.
A couple days later all five of us met together and us ladies finally got to meet Ghanji.
We worked for few days, all day, to practice our music together before our first show. We figured out how our sitting arrangement was to be for performing.  Ghanji gave us all some very valuable lessons on sound equipment, how to use it, set it up and break it down.

Our first show was so blessed. It was in Malibu, up Las Flores Canyon Road, hosted by Riz Mirza and Oriah. Riz and Oriah are an amazing couple that are devoted to eachother and to helping others to heal and transform, so as to truly be authenticly happy. Riz Mirza is a renowned psychic trance channel who hosts weekly gatherings at his home in which he channels “Chief Red Eagle” in order to give insights to people. Oriah is an amazing life coach that has the ability to steer people to the root of their personal core issues that need healing. I am so grateful that I got to connect with them. Oriah said this about our concert: “This was the most amazing Kirtan I have ever seen. Everyone had chills and I cried several times from the amazing light that was washing us from these clearly channeled songs.
Beautiful rhythm and uniquely contemporary. Looking forward to having them come back ….absolutely wonderful.”

Vishaka and I did return later after our tour was over and attended a Circle of Light. It was very powerful and insightful for us both. We ended up spending the night there, sleeping outside, under the stars, and saw UFO’s hovering back and forth in the distance over the ridge. Oriah said they see them all the time.

Back to the tour- the show in Malibu was indeed magical, with the moon rising behind us on our last water blessing songs, I feel it was the most special actually, it being very intimate with a very open minded and open hearted group. SeaStar got to be re-united with a cousin she hadn’t seen in like 15 years. That was sweet. J
After the show we got to spend the night in a ridiculously sweet beach house, literally, on the beach. We could hear the waves crashing outside all night long. Ahhhh….

The next morning we all had a lovely beach stroll and Malibu health food store raid before heading back to Ojai. I probably don’t need to mention that we hit up every health food store in our path! “Parking lot picnics” often followed….

The next show we had was in Ojai at Sacred Space (arranged by Ghanji), a yoga and dance studio. It was really lovely, I felt like we were on an altar. We got to meet a lot of sweet Ojai-ans.

Divinitree Yoga and Art studio in Santa Barbara was our next show, and none of us knew what it was going to be like. It was a relatively new space that had its grand opening a few months prior. The space turned out to be beautiful with a gorgeous mural on the wall. There was a sri yantra centered right behind us. It was awesome. We saw many familiar faces there that night, including Vishaka’s sister Susan, his percussionist friend Budhi and a girl that SeaStar had met in Kalalau Valley.

After this show it was time to get “on the road.”  Ghanji thought out exactly how we were to pack everything. Vishaka and I were to drive the Toyota Highlander which was packed with all the instruments. Ghanji, Parmita and SeaStar were in the Truck with the ShadowCruiser camper attached, carrying all the sound equipment and luggage. Off we went!

First stop- We visited Vishaka's mother in the home where where she is being taken care of. We played music for the elderly people that were there and shared our love. It was very emotional and a bit sad, many of the people were barely cognizant but the one's that were, appeared to love it! Then we headed to Templeton, where we stayed the night with Vishaka’s brother Mike and his wife Catherine. They threw together a "smorgesbord" and were amazing hosts. We had a great visit and took off in the late morning- Off towards Big Sur!

We made it to Big Sur and didn’t have much luck finding a camp spot. All the campgrounds were full, and it isn’t too easy finding off the road spots there. We stopped at this gas station and it turned out to also be a little café/restaurant and the Big Sur Spirit Gardens all in the same area.

We met the guy who was sort of managing the gardens and we ended up having a little practice there and the man, Hilary said we could stay the night there. We thanked him and told him we would come back if we couldn’t swing a place to crash at or near Esalen. We went back to Esalen to go soak in their amazing healing hot mineral water pools that are right alongside the cliff, over looking the glassy ocean and kelp beds. We even saw a pod of dolphins.
When we got back to the gardens, it was a bit late. Perhaps Hilary thought we weren’t going to come back, because all the gates were locked. So we ended up posting up right in the parking lot. It wasn’t all that bad. In the morning, the sun was shining on the mountains, quite glorious!

We drove on towards Santa Cruz that day. We hit up the farmers market and had some lunch then we went to my ohana’s house in Ben Lomond. The Chadwicks are good friends of my family. Daren and Jannine are an awesome couple with three awesome and talented children all of which are now adults. Daren has mad skills, especially when it comes to musical instruments and sound engineering. Currently he’s building these special sitar/guitars. (Vishaka wanted one bad!) Jannine is a brilliant woman, a teacher, a musician and singer/songwriter. For the last several years, she has been writing amazing children’s musicals with well known tunes completely re-written for the themes of the plays. The Little People’s theater in Ben Lomond are extremely blessed to have her in the community. We all got to attend the last night of the children’s musical “Alice’s Avengers” which was a mix between Batman and Alice n Wonderland. It was ridiculously well done.

We spent the night at their place that night, had a little practice the next day before heading to Oakland for our show at Earth tribe Yoga. It was Lughnasa, August 1st. My friend Amy that I had met in Boston when I lived there, runs the studio, right in the heart of the Business district, and it’s a really beautiful space! It was so cool getting to see her after like 6 years.  Vishaka and Ghanji played for the yoga class right before our concert. It was awesome and everyone loved it. Then we all played together. It was super sweet to see so many smiling faces and some people dancing too. We stayed with Amy that night, had a sweet visit and were off in the morning to San Francisco!

San Francisco is a beautiful city, being so close to the ocean, with Golden Gate Park, all the hills and curves.  Vishaka, Ghanji and I had a lovely stroll through the park, in all its summer flower power. Oh the dahlias!

Flashback to the last time I was in SF, 2 years prior with my friends Nahko, Frenchy, SaraTone, Aliina and Lucca. There was a huge Haight-Ashbury street festival going on, We all met up there played on the street, then on Mutiny Radio in which we got to meet the legendary “Diamond Dave.” That night we ended up incredibly crashing in and on the van next to Ocean Beach. Well, this time The Nectarian Collective got to share music on the radio waves. They all loved it! It was great getting to see Diamond Dave again. What a sweet man, so dedicated to justice and the movement of peace and equality.
That night we went to see Xavier Rudd and Nahko n Medicine for the People in Santa Cruz.  The show was really good, it was my first time seeing Xavier Rudd, and I absolutely love what he does. Him, alone, makes so much beautiful sound, between his voice, guitar, didgiridoo. His sound is very tribal and heartfelt. It was great getting to see Nahko and the crew too.
We also saw many other good friends, Hawaii ‘Ohana. Alohi, Montana, Craig, Anu, Evan and more. After the show we ended up staying way up on a mountain in Aptos, with some friends. We barely found the place, it was out there way up a road I hadn’t been up since I was a child.
The next day we cruised Santa Cruz. Ghanji ended up hanging out with his kirtan teacher friend Girish, Vishaka and I went to the beach in Seacliff, and we all just did our own thing for the day and met back up at Divinitree Yoga in Santa Cruz.  This was an interesting show. Its a lot to promote for a show and to get people to come, in the midst of planning and traveling but we just trusted and put the word out as best as we could to those we knew in the area and those we met on the street. Not many people showed up in Santa Cruz, yet it was perfect. I saw an old friend of my brother’s I hadn’t seen since I was a teenager and few other people that we knew as well as people that we got to meet and connect with afterwards.

We stayed that night at a magical hill top house of our artist friend Sage, way up a road in Soquel. The view in the morning was gorgeous, looking down a valley of redwood trees all the way to the ocean.  We had cup after cup of tea, vedic astrology readings and yummy breakfast before heading out to our next destination: Sebastopol.
Devi Yoga Center, when I first found it online had this triple goddess image and I knew that we would play there. It was a very sweet space and a great turnout. Again, more familiar faces!  Kumara, Dream, Alisa, Isis….Parmita and SeaStar stayed with their girlfriends that night and the rest of us stayed with Dream, a woman Vishaka met not long before on the Big Island while she was attending Katalin’s Goddess retreat. He had done a chart reading for her.  It was good to connect with her, what a strong mother and passionate seeker. I feel she will return to Hawaii soon. I really connected with her daughter and enjoyed picking those sweet golden apples from their yard.
After the Sebastopol there were some intense energies and hormones flying around our group and we all needed a little time and space to cool off, or rather heat up more til it all evaporated! We went to Harbin hot springs. Its been said that being in a band can be challenging, and what we were doing was pretty bold- jumping right into touring after never even really playing together and getting to know each other all at the same time!  We all had our own expectations of how it would be, maybe some of us didn’t really have any expectations at all. Staying present, clear, communicative and kind just wasn’t always easy-for all of us, hence the “challenges” of being in a band.
Harbin was a great way to melt it all away. Getting in and out of that searing hot pool and icy cold pool was electrifying. I have never in my life been in water that hot. I thought that it would burn me. What it did was burn out any tension or impurities and make me feel brand new. I had been hearing about Harbin for years from my friends, it was great to finally be there and experience it- the comfortable nudity and happy relaxed faces. You can’t really be grumpy when you go to a place that, at least not for long. We were there for new moon and there was a lovely new moon ritual with our good friend Po A Tree, and Parmita and I got to sing a little bit with her. We LOVE Po A Tree's beautiful, healing music. Here's a beautiful video of her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVdGlx0YMBs
So, we were making our way to Beloved Festival and found out our friend Murray Kyle was going to be playing at Shasta Yoga Center which on the way! It was the same place that we would be playing at a week later. We got to Shasta and immediately saw peeps we knew in the parking lot of the studio, which was right next to the health food store.  The show was beautiful, very healing music. Vishaka and Murray got to sit in a little bit with him at the end.
We made friends with a woman who opened for him, Leora Love, who we got to know better later in Ashland. That night we found a place to camp off the side of the road on the way up the mountain. The next morning we swam in "Castle Lake," beautiful clear and cold water.

The next day we made our way more up north and we ended up splitting up, Vishaka and I impulsively went to my aunts in Grants Pass and the rest of the crew went on to Eugene to stay with a friend.  It was great to surprise my auntie and get to have dinner with her and a nice bed to sleep in.  Her garden was going off and we got to pick tomatoes, peppers, basil and flowers to bring with us.  On to Beloved festival!
We all reconnected in Eugene and went from there. It was a beautiful drive through hills and forests of tall evergreens. V and I made a wonderful stop on the way in a magical garden where I was entranced with all the flowers and bees and hummingbirds! I could have stayed there forever.
Finally we arrived at the location. On the way into the festival grounds you drive a mile or two down the long driveway and all along the way are hand painted signs with magical messages.
Once we got in we found our spot to camp. V and I claimed a spot in Artist Camp, we set up our tent, put up my hand made prayer flags and Sarasvati tapestry and made our way to the opening circle.
It was Starhawk and our sister SaraTone! Starhawk led a beautiful spiral dance and song:    That ended up merging into Medicine for the People kicking off the festival’s music.  It was so moving to witness my friends Nahko, Chase and Hope playing for so many people and also looking around and seeing SO many beloved friends of mine.  I had tears in my eyes for sure.  Towards the end of their set Max, who’s been a member of Medicine for the people from the beginning when I used to sing with them, took to the stage and got everyone’s attention to ask his beloved to marry him. It was the sweetest!
There was just so much amazing music, so much beautiful art, so many beautiful people and It was clear that much care and thought went into every aspect of the festival.
There were nature altars (built by our brother Nature, himself) all around the entire grounds, there was something magical and beautiful around every turn, in every hidden grove. Even the port-a-potties had hand written affirmation signs and bundles of evergreens and flowers hanging inside.  Some of my personal highlights were getting to sing and play with SaraTone and Somrananda and so many other friends: Tubby Love, Murray Kyle, Don Corey.
The musical acts I was most ecstatic with were Mike Love and Paula Fuga, Oliver Mtukudzi (from Zimbabwe-I was SO stoked), Chris Berry and Youssoupha Sidibe, and Xavier Rudd. Everyone Orchestra was Epic: its a festival favorite in which many musicians participate and there's the main conductor who just gets the music going and its all improvisation and the audience participates. Check out the orbs in this photo!
The last group to play at the festival was Fanna Fi Allah, our friend Devananda sings with them, beautiful traditional Qawwali devotional Pakistani music. (http://www.fanna-fi-allah.com/)
Its a beautiful and rare sounds to behold by the soul.
Before their set there was about 30 minutes of “SolSara” which involved gazing silently into the eyes of people near you. Some people you might have known and others perhaps not at all. You simply gazed at eachother, in the eyes. Then the people that had been leading this workshop during the festival would ask guiding questions that would really get you to make meaning of your experience and share your thoughts and experience, while holding your gaze, from a heart space of acceptance. It was beautiful. Check out website to learn more: http://www.solsara.net/
Getting meet and talk to Starhawk during her workshop was really good. What a woman! She is currently working on making her book “The Fifth Sacred Thing” into a movie. She is an activist, constantly working to raise awareness of real solutions as to how we could live in peaceful and sustainable ways in the world. Her books have really made an impact on my life and assisted me on my path of empowerment. See how you can get involved with her righteous and radical project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkI0uo151YY
The closing of the festival was the biggest circle I have ever held hands with. It was beautiful, two thousand people Om-ing and singing together.  I hope to get to share my music there someday.
After Beloved, we all went back to that beautiful garden and had a little fairie time, got some honey to take along with us.

We went to the Ashland Wellsprings. It turned out to be “Ladies Night,” which was lovely. The guys had to wait til the morning to get their soak.
The next day we went to Mt. Shasta. Our show was the following day but I was supposed to meet up with someone at the studio for an orientation. We had a lovely visit with some sweet people who lived there in a magical cottage with more gems and crystals than I’ve probably ever been around. The guy was an incredible jewelry maker and his lovely partner/muse a painter, musician and singer: “Bee Born.” Our friend Treestar was also there with her sweet friend. That night we slept in a campground amidst giant trees.

The following day we went to practice up on the mountain. It was chilly up there and a bit hazy due to the fires that were blazing in southern Oregon.  We made up a little mountain song that we ended up sharing that night.  It was a sweet gathering, friends from Big Island were there, Treestar played a little flute with us.
Our altar that night was especially charged from all the crystals that Gogee
contributed.

We ended up camping out at a cool spot off the road again, along with Robert Kent and a few others. We had a sweet bright morning, made tea and breakfast before a refreshing swim in Castle Lake, where we saw more friends!
Vishaka and I decided we would find our own place to stay that night and decided to check out Dunsmuir. My friend Kate lives and works there as a chef at The Dogwood Diner Good food!) and we were fortunately able to stay a night in the little vacation rental next to her place after having a nice dinner. In the morning we went to the Dunsmuir botanical gardens, which mostly is a collection of native plants, such as dogwood. The beautiful upper Sacramento River was running along the gardens. When in Shasta area, it is a must to visit the headwaters in Shasta City Park. We went there as much as possible to get our drinking water. The water pours out from the side of the mountain, pure and blessed.
We had to head back to Ashland WellSprings, we wanted to get there a day before the festival started to get our campsite nice and set up. This festival was way more relaxed feeling and less people than Beloved, which was a relief.

There was also so much amazing music and art at Peace Village Festival. Our group got to play a wonderful set at a great time! It was awesome. I wish we got some pictures! In fact I barely took any photos at this festival! So here’s a link of this awesome guy Jeff Eichen’s amazing photos that he took!
Our campsite was very sweet, with dear friends. It felt like home.
We had an epic altar and healing space set up and we enjoyed it very much, playing music and connecting and eating yummy food. Some highlights of Peace Village Festival: Murray Kyle’s set then Jamming out with friends in the hot tub then Jamming out in the dome nearly til dawn…ahhyeah…
The day after the festival was over I was able to see my auntie Tina again as well as her husband and my Grandma. It was so special to get to see my grandma, I hadn’t seen her in a couple years. I love her very much.  I really feel she was a huge influence on me being a singer and musician, as she was the first person to sing so much to me and teach me piano. I was happy that she was able to finally meet Vishaka too. It was a great visit with them all.
Our last show was in Ashland at Studio Z.  We had a few special guests that night that shared songs: Peter Barley (who plays guitar with SeaStar), Leora Love, Hanna (who also sang with Murray) and SaraTone.  It was a great finale to our little tour.  Ashland is a beautiful town, with a good feeling community.  Seastar’s friend Peter has been living in Ashland, and that is where we stayed that night.
The next day we circled up and shared our gratitude before parting ways with SeaStar. She ended up staying in Ashland, as her and Peter were going to traveling to do their own tour.  I felt so much gladness for her journey to come and blessed her journey with Love. Our Nectarian Tour was thus complete and accomplished.
Ghanji, Parmita, Vishaka and I headed back on the road…back to…Harbin Hot Springs.  One notable phenomenon that occurred on the road towards Harbin was that we flew through a gigantic swarm of Dragonflies. There must have been a million! It was incredible. It is said that “the spiritual meaning of the Dragonfly totem symbolizes going past self-created illusions that limit growth and change.  Dragonflies are the embodiment of color magic, and transformation.” http://www.universeofsymbolism.com/symbolic-dragonfly-meaning.html
We had one more wonderful soak in the healing waters of Harbin under the full moon.  This time I had no problem melting in the hot pool. The next day, we said farewell to dear Parmita, who was going to stay there and meet up with her friend and go on her next adventures! I was excited for her.
Ghanji, Vishaka and I hit the road, to Cupertino! We stayed two nights with my grandparents and got to have a great dinner with them and my aunt, uncles and cousins.  We did a little concert for them under the old oak tree. It was classic and so heartwarming to be with my family and have them all get to meet Vishaka and Ghanji.
I had a feeling that Vishaka and I would get one more visit with them again. Indeed we did.
Our last stop before heading back down to Ojai was Mt. Madonna Retreat center, which is nestled in the mountainous redwood forests
above Watsonville.
Ghanji’s friend and teacher Girish had been holding a “Kirtan Camp” retreat there all that week and we were getting to go to the last evening’s kirtan of his. It was super sweet!

So many kind people there and what a beautiful place. I got to wander their gardens before dark, it was super magical. I found their little tulsi patch. I found a blooming lotus pond! I found a huge flowering bush that had so many hummingbirds thriving off it.
There were beautiful, happy deer all around on the grounds.  V and I slept that night on the floor of one of the school’s rooms there where the kirtan classes had been happening. It was quite comfortable on the thick layer of blankets!
We had a lovely breakfast the next morning and got to check out the festivities that were going on- It was a celebration for Hanuman! I never knew that much about Hanuman, but after reading into it I understand why Hanuman plays such a big role in Hindu culture. One interesting thing I learned is that it was Hanuman that was the first to teach Pranayama to mankind. You can read more Hanuman here : http://www.exoticindiaart.com/article/hanuman/

Back to Ojai we went, right back to Ghanji’s house where we started the whole journey.  We are so grateful to Ghanji for his generosity of sharing all his time, energy, instruments, sound equipment and vehicles with us to make our tour possible! What a brother!
Days later he would be going to the Bhakti Festival to play tabla.
At this point of our trip, it was just the beginning of another adventure for Vishaka and I and it all just unfolded in a sweet flow, in which we visited and stayed with great friends, new and old, and experienced the energy unknown (to us) places and bodies of water.
First we a had a wonderful few days with Lisa and her daughter Amara in OJAI. Highlights: Great day at Carpenteria Beach, giving ourselves delicious facials with honey and spirulina, and yummy dinners. Then we picked up a rental car that we would have for the remainder of the trip. Away we went……
